Getting set up

Selecting the right location is often the number one struggle when fishing new destinations. As a wise man once said: “where there’s water, there’s fish”.

Throughout every region of Thailand, there are local fishing shops with all the necessary equipment one needs to start their fishing journey.

  • There are two main methods of bottom fishing:

    1) sinker or sliding weight with worm, chicken, or bread

    2) method feeders with pop ups. In Thailand, the main bait for method feeders is ground bait, mixed with water and bread.

  • Small silver bait fish, prawns, frogs, insects, and worms are often free line close to shore around vegetation and underwater obstructions.

  • This is the traditional Thai method of fishing that involves cane pole, light line, small hooks, match stick float, and particle bait.

All standard ocean fishing rigs can be productive in the right areas. Bottom fishing, live lining, and lure casting are the recreational methods of choice in Thailand’s coastal regions. Standard bait inshore and offshore consists of live and cut bait fish, squid, and prawns.

Jigs and shallow diving lures provide good fun on light tackle in the shallow reefs and mangroves. To catch the bigger oceanic and pelagic species, the locals use an assortment of lures and tactics based on conditions and time of year.
